Merge Modern:

A New Chapter for Contemporary Art in Downtown Albuquerque

Merge Modern is an independent contemporary art gallery opening its new home on the ground floor of the Gizmo Arts Building in downtown Albuquerque in Fall 2026. What began as an cafe gallery concept inside Catalyst Coffee has grown into a dedicated exhibition space committed to showcasing contemporary local and regional art and fostering meaningful connections between artists, collectors, and the community.

Founded by artist, curator, and gallery director Angie Rehnberg, Merge Modern is the culmination of more than two decades working in the arts. Her experience includes art handling, exhibition installation, and gallery management throughout New Mexico, as well as work at national art fairs including SOFA Chicago, Art San Diego, and Palm Springs Modernism. Most recently, Angie spent the past two years as a gallery associate at Gallery Hózhó, where she further developed her expertise in exhibitions, artist representation, sales, and community engagement.

The gallery's original collaboration with Catalyst Coffee demonstrated that art thrives when it becomes part of everyday life. That successful model laid the foundation for Merge Modern's next evolution: a permanent downtown gallery designed to expand exhibitions, represent more artists, host workshops and special events, and create a vibrant destination for contemporary art in Albuquerque.

Today, Merge Modern is dedicated to presenting thoughtfully curated exhibitions featuring emerging and established artists from New Mexico and beyond. More than a gallery, it is a welcoming space where creativity, conversation, and community come together, and where artists and collectors can build lasting connections.

As Merge Modern opens its doors in downtown Albuquerque, it carries forward the spirit that inspired its beginnings while embracing an exciting future in the heart of the city's growing arts district.
