About Angie Rehnberg

Angie Rehnberg is a New Mexico artist, independent curator, arts professional, and founder and executive director of Merge Modern, a contemporary art gallery based in Albuquerque. With more than 20 years of experience in the arts, her career has developed across studio practice, exhibition curation, art handling and installation, gallery operations, marketing, event production, and grassroots community engagement.

A graduate of the College of Santa Fe, where she earned her BFA in 2007, Rehnberg has maintained an active studio practice while building a career centered around connecting artists, audiences, and spaces. Her own work spans painting, mixed media, photography, and interdisciplinary practices, often exploring transformation, identity, resilience, nature, and the complexities of the human experience. Her work has been exhibited throughout New Mexico in galleries, cultural spaces, juried exhibitions, and community-based projects.

Alongside her studio practice, Rehnberg has spent much of her career working behind the scenes in the arts. Her professional experience includes art handling and installation, gallery management, exhibition development, artist coordination, marketing and social media, collector relations, event production, and curatorial work. These experiences have given her an understanding of both the creative and operational sides of sustaining an arts organization.

Community-building has been a consistent part of her work since graduating college. Rehnberg has independently organized pop-up exhibitions, creative meetups, artist gatherings, workshops, and cultural events, often activating vacant, temporary, or underutilized spaces as places for artists and the public to connect. Her approach is rooted in the belief that meaningful arts experiences do not always have to begin within established institutions. Sometimes they begin with an available room, a group of artists, and the willingness to bring people together.

That grassroots approach eventually helped shape Merge Modern, an artist-run contemporary gallery created to provide New Mexico artists with thoughtful exhibition opportunities while building stronger connections between artists, collectors, businesses, and the broader community. Rehnberg has curated and produced exhibitions including On the Verge, Order Through Chaos, Road Map, and Her Terrain, alongside artist features, workshops, pop-ups, live events, and collaborative programming.

Her broader professional experience has also included gallery and exhibition work with organizations and spaces throughout Albuquerque, including Gallery Hózhó, as well as participation in exhibitions and arts programming at venues such as Gallery With a Cause at the New Mexico Cancer Center, OT Circus, the Albuquerque International Sunport, and other independent and community arts spaces.

Today, Rehnberg continues to develop Merge Modern as both a contemporary gallery and a platform for creative opportunity. Her focus remains on supporting working artists, creating accessible pathways into the arts, mentoring emerging arts professionals, activating community spaces, and building sustainable connections between art and the people who experience it.

At the center of her work is a simple philosophy: art thrives when artists are given space, visibility, connection, and the opportunity to grow.
